A sagging brow or wrinkles and creases between the brows and along the forehead can make a person look tired, angry or older than they really are. Some people are born with a naturally low brow or forehead, but most people notice it starting to droop as they age. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joel Williams performs brow lift surgery to elevate the brow and smooth the forehead area, eliminating wrinkles and lines.

Brow Lift Candidates

Brow lift is appropriate for individuals who notice undesirable traits around their eyes and forehead, because of either aging or genetics. Some of these characteristics include the following:

  • Low or sagging eyebrows
  • Horizontal lines across the forehead
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Lateral hooding

Candidates for brow lift in the Chattanooga area should be in relatively good health and not smoke. They should have reasonable goals for surgery and be informed of all the potential risks of surgery, which will be thoroughly discussed during the initial consultation.

Brow Lift Surgery

Brow lift and other facial plastic surgery treatments are typically performed as outpatient procedures at Dr. Williams' state-of-the-art surgical center. To begin, brow lift incisions are made in the temples and hidden within the scalp. Dr. Williams gently separates the skin from the tissues for greater access to the underlying structures. He repositions the tissues and muscles and tightens the skin to smooth out creases and furrows in the forehead, as well as to raise the sagging brow. By elevating the brow line and smoothing the forehead skin, the patient looks years younger.

Brow lift may be performed endoscopically; this approach involves small incisions, a tiny video camera and special surgical instruments. The video camera is inserted under the skin through small incisions, and projects images onto a monitor in the operating room. Dr. Williams is able to make the necessary surgical alterations by looking at the monitor.

Brow lift may be combined with another facial plastic surgery procedure, such as a facelift or eyelid surgery, to create more dramatic and balanced results.

Recovering from Brow Lift

After brow lift surgery, the face will be swollen, sore and bruised. This is completely normal and should dissipate over the next few weeks. It's important that brow lift Chattanooga patients rest and avoid strenuous activity for several days following the surgery and keep the head elevated. Dr. Williams will provide a list of postoperative instructions which should be followed closely during recovery. He will see patients for several follow-up visits after surgery and clear them to return to normal activities when appropriate.

Benefits and Risks of Brow Lift

The results of a brow lift are very transformative and can take years off of the face. Results will also make a person look well-rested and more pleasant. The scars are hidden in the scalp so they are mostly undetectable.

Potential brow lift risks include infection, hematoma, complications from the anesthesia, injury to the facial nerves, asymmetry, skin loss and changes in the sensation of the skin (possible numbness). Talk to Chattanooga / Dalton cosmetic surgery provider Dr. Williams during the surgical consultation about these risks and the steps he takes to mitigate them. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Williams is very well trained in brow lift surgery and has the experience to properly handle potential complications as they arise.

"Brow lift surgery is often the least requested facial surgery because patients do not realize they have sagging brows. They hold the brows up with the forehead muscle. This involuntary activity creates transverse lines on the forehead. After brow lift surgery patients are often surprised that the difference is more than they expected."
